Isn’t football supposed to be a contact sport with lots of hitting? Well now the National Football League (NFL) is changing this notion. The NFL has now implemented a new roughing the passer penalty that has upset lots of players and fans who keep up with the NFL. The penalty is meant to prevent the quarterback (QB) from being thrown or landed on after they have thrown a pass. This rule has been put in play to help prevent injuries such as Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers’ broken collarbone last season.
I feel that this penalty should be toned down quite a bit. Multiple players such as Clay Matthews are hitting the quarterback with the right technique and are not trying to hurt them. They are just playing the game of football. Clay Matthews had been called for four roughing the passer penalties in his first nine years of his playing in the league. Yet, after this new rule was put in play, this season he already has three roughing the passer penalties. I believe that this is way too many penalties to get in 6 weeks of play.
The sport is football and these players wear pads for a reason. If the player takes a quarterback down after they have released the football, but the technique they use is correct and they are not trying to injure the quarterback, then a flag should not be thrown. This rule is such a bad idea and I feel that it is only going to get worse over time.
Things such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and broken bones are becoming a huge part of sports, especially football, in today’s time. Lots of parents are becoming very protective of their kids and many do not even want them to play football. So, even though the penalty is being put in place to keep players safe and to create more enthusiasm when it comes to playing the sport, the players are still choosing to play football! Football has lots of hitting, and I feel that quarterbacks being hit is part of the game so the NFL should not try to prevent that from ever happening.
